AVCHD File Extension

AVCHD is a camcorder video format. It is a high definition video file that is very popular among home video makers. AVCHD stands for Advanced Video Codec High Definition. This format belongs to the collection of today’s HD digital video formats.

• AVCHD Format

Developed by Panasonic and Sony, AVCHD was first introduced in 2006. Although intended for consumer camcorders, it was later used by professional movie makers. AVCHD is pattered along the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video standard and supports the Dolby AC-3 digital audio format.

• AVCHD Codec

The AVCHD codec is regarded as a very efficient video codec. As a matter of fact, is one of the most reliable HD formats available today. But because of the fact that it is not a very popular one either, only professional editors can unearth its full potential. The best thing about this codec is the fact that it can be easily stored in a more portable media such as DVD discs, internal storage, and memory cards. However, many home users opt to convert an AVCHD file into another format for editing purposes. Aside from Sony and Panasonic, this codec is also used by Canon and JVC camcorders.

• AVCHD Compatibility Issues

Although very popular within the camcorder industry, the AVCHD format is not readily playable by any of the major operating systems. Computers running Windows Vista and XP will have to download the necessary codecs and registry patches. For even lower systems, the file may not be played accurately. Only Windows 7 and higher have native support for this file.

Unfortunately for Mac users, this file is not supported at all. The only recourse is to download a compatible player and software converter for playback or editing purposes. Oftentimes, there is an AVCHD video player that comes with the software package of the camcorder that can be used for the same purpose instead.
