About SWF
Adobe used SWF as the format for Flash-based files. Developed by Futurewave Software, this file format was taken over by both Adobe Systems and Macromedia later on. SWF can be generated by different Adobe software such as After Effects, Flash Builder, and Flash. However, SWF files can also be created with the use of some freeware like the SWFTools.
SWF used to mean Shockwave Flash then it was changed to Small Web Format. SWF used to be just a container of vector-based images and objects. However, further developments of the file allowed it to contain audio and video elements as well. SWF can be played by almost any browser and by all types of Flash players.
